It’s hard to believe Kate hadn’t had her first ice cream cone yet.

We took her to our local ice cream shop, Brusters, that gives free Baby Cones to kids 40 inches or less (with bonus sprinkles!)

She grimaced at first (she does that with all new foods) and then gobbled up all of the ice cream.

I recently changed jobs, leaving Font Bureau after 11 years(!).

My friends at The Font Bureau made this wonderful poster as a going-away present.

The text is a Tech Haiku that I wrote a long time ago.

Geek Story:

Back in the day, whenever I was bored or frustrated, I’d write job-related haiku to amuse myself. (I don’t write these any more; now I have a dog who listens to all of my complaints.)

One day Dyana was teaching herself Python and the Random feature, and she needed something to randomize. So I handed over my verses and she wrote a program that picked random verses and compiled them. (print line [random.choice(range(x,y))])

The poster is one of those randomized haiku.

The original verses:

    Waiting for email.

    They said they need the fonts NOW!

    They’ll call me next week.

    My fonts will not work.

    They look jaggy on the screen.

    AOL email.

    Back from the Offsite.

    Looking at the To Do list.

    Take two more aspirin.

To make a long story short: bureaucracies are frustrating and we now have new birth certificates.

We brought along all of the paperwork, and had them take the pictures.
After they took this picture, they were worried that they were too close and that the picture would be rejected because her face is too large.
They retook the picture (which didn’t appear to be much smaller) and gave us this very nice picture as a souvenir.

Take Your Kids to Work Day:

They don’t always love each other, but they always tolerate one another.

We were all working in the office a couple of weeks ago and Rooney let out a big sigh.

He does that a lot, so we ignored him.

Then he sighed again and we finally looked.

There was Kate, sitting on top of Rooney, looking out the window.

God bless Rooney, he just sat there quietly tolerating his Kate.

When I finally noticed, she had climbed onto the footstool (which she and Rooney use to look out the window) and then jumped from there onto Mark’s office chair (she’s done it a couple more times since – with adult supervision).

Now, Mark says, we just need to teach her how to make fonts.
